EUGENE, Ore. — Local businesses are already feeling the impact of a new rush for couples to marry.
Large groups trickled in all day Monday at Davis Restaurant and Bar in downtown Eugene for weddings and celebrations.
Same-sex couples say word spread quickly Monday morning that there would be pastors and a judge officiating ceremonies at the Davis. Couple after couple shared their vows, kissed and signed their marriage certificate as a supportive group watched.
One couple says they’ve been waiting for this moment for nearly 25 years.
“We called my sister on the way here and said we’re going to watch some friends, and she goes well why aren’t you doing it? You need to be doing it. We were going to kind of plan it out, but it’s just like why not, let’s just do it,” said newlyweds Kathleen Gage & Karen Noel.
Gage and Noel say they plan to celebrate into the evening, but celebrations won’t stop there. They say they know same-sex couples will begin planning wedding ceremonies in the coming days.
