EUGENE, Ore — Santa Clara volunteer firefighters are preparing for the 57th annual chicken barbecue.
Forty volunteer firefighters provide emergency service in the Santa Clara area and this fundraiser generates one third of their budget. The money goes directly to the volunteer association for community events and education programs.
Organizers say every year they sell out of chickens. “The event is huge. I mean this is our 57th year so we’ve been doing this a very long time and people miles away can smell the BBQ chicken flowing. It’s an amazing event. People will stop by. People will honk their horns. It’s an amazing thing for the community and really a great way to bring everyone together,” says Erin White, 2014 Santa Clara Volunteer Firefighter BBQ Chair.
On Saturday, 750 chickens will be slow cooked on the grill. Also on the menu: baked beans, coleslaw, rolls, ice cream and soda.
Half chickens sell for $6.00. A chicken dinner costs $10.
The BBQ starts Saturday, August 2, at 1o a.m. and continues until the chickens run out.
