DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — Pretty much every road in our region was affected in some way Friday, because of the icy conditions.

Just after five Friday morning, a semi truck overturned and caught on fire on I-5 south, near milepost 157 between Sutherlin and Cottage Grove.

Oregon State Police say the semi was headed southbound, when it fish tailed, flipped off the road and caught on fire.

Police say the USF Reddaway truck was carrying a load of fertilizer and diesel, and hazmat crews did respond.

Police say the semi’s cabin was completely engulfed in flames, but the driver walked away.

“The driver, operated the vehicle got out of the vehicle just fine, he’s safe and he’s a little bit shaken up but we got him a courtesy ride to Rice Hill where he arranged tows and that kind of thing,” said Trooper Ken Terry, Oregon State Police.

I-5 was closed in both directions for about two hours.

Thank you for this news story. Watching it made my husband and I realize what a miracle it is that the driver survived. He and his wife are wonderful people, active in our church and community. We are so grateful that he is okay, and for all the help and support given to him during such a traumatic event.
