Sen. Merkley’s Experience at Capitol

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley was among the lawmakers ducking for cover when those shots rang out at the nation’s capital, Thursday.

Sen. Merkley says he just finished a meeting at the Capitol and was walking on an outside back to the Senate office buildings. He was with two other senators when he saw at least a dozen police cars racing up Constitutional Avenue.

“The Capitol Police were running from the capitol towards us and were yelling at us to get down and take cover, and so we did. We ducked down behind cars that were there along that curving driveway,” Sen. Merkley said.

Oregon Representative Peter DeFazio also put out this statement:

“I am grateful to the brave Capitol police officers who guard the Capitol, members of Congress, our staff and the public every day.”
