SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley visited Springfield Monday as part of his oil-free state tour.
Merkley is traveling by electric car from the Washington border to the California border, visiting communities along the way.
He plans to drive the more than 300 miles without using a single drop of gas.
Merkley says he wants to start a discussion about smart investments and the end to American’s overseas oil needs.
“We’re spending nearly a billion dollars a day. It’s been under a billion. It’s been over a billion, but basically a billion dollars a day on foreign oil. That is a huge shipment of jobs and wealth overseas. Whereas if we spend that money here, we’re creating jobs and wealth in America,” Merkley said.
He recently introduced legislation that would provide short-term incentives for electric vehicle production.
