SLEEPS Doesn’t Sleep on Christmas

EUGENE, Ore. — Even though it was Christmas Day, about a dozen protesters in Eugene didn’t take the day off.

The group of homeless activists called SLEEPS continued with their demonstrations outside the old federal courthouse Tuesday.

Members of SLEEPS have been camping out there since Saturday after taking a few days off because of the harsh winter weather.

Activists say although they celebrated the holiday with one another, raising awareness about the human right for shelter is their priority no matter what day it is.

“There are still folks outside in the weather unprotected that really want to be with people that they care about,” said SLEEPS protester Mark Hubbell.

One protester is on his 15th day of a hunger strike as his way of raising awareness of the legal right to sleep.
