Meteorologist Melissa Frey’s Forecast Discussion:
Today is day number six of staying below freezing all day and the 9th day with lows below freezing overnight. We’ll only climb to the mid 20s this afternoon and then its back to the teens tonight.
In addition to this historically cold weather, we’re also seeing poor air quality. Our air quality is the worst we’ve seen in four years and the index has moved into the “Unhealthy” category. There air is full of fine particulates from wood burning stoves, which many are using because of the cold weather. The air quality will likely deteriorate until burning stops or when we get rain on Thursday.
This cold arctic air mass will move on after Wednesday, but it’ll be a slow warm up until then and we’ll stay below freezing day and night.
The jet stream will drop south, bringing in the next round of storms Thursday. This storm may bring in around of freezing rain and/or sleet early in the day before turning to rain Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures will then return to normal for the weekend with showers off and on.
