Sorority Members Promote Fire Safety

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Sorority members from Oregon State University will go door to door this weekend to remind people to check their smoke alarms.

Volunteer firefighters will also help out by installing free smoke alarms for residents and handing out nine-volt batteries.

The Corvallis Fire Department says 80 percent of fires involving students happen in off-campus apartments or rental homes. Twenty percent of residential smoke alarms no longer work or have dead batteries.

Firefighters plan to visit 500 homes Saturday and expect to test more than 200 smoke alarms.

Between 20 and 40 of those will likely be restored or replaced.
