Spontaneous Combustion Causes Fire

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – Polk County Fire responded to a commercial fire at a manufacturing facility Friday.

Fire crews arrived at the Forest River Facility at 900 Hoffman Rd. around 8 p.m. Crews say the fire was located in a stand-alone paint building.

Firefighters say the dry chemical extinguishing system in the building was activated, but failed to extinguish the fire.

Crews entered the building to try and put out the flames but were forced to abandon the structure due to indication of a possible roof collapse. They continued to work from doorways and removed metal siding on the structure. The fire was under control by 9 p.m.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was a spontaneous combustion of filters utilized in the ventilation system of the paint booth.
