EUGENE, Ore. — Radio hosts devoted to covering the Ducks were a little caught off guard by the announcement of UO Head Football Coach Chip Kelly leaving the school.
At 95.3 The Score, fans have been calling the station all day in utter shock. The people there make a living watching UO’s every move and they say Wednesday is a turning point for Duck football.
“I know there are people who are going to think it’s not that big a deal, they’ll just keep the roll going. There’s no lock there, this is a big moment in Oregon football for sure,” said Steve Tannen, 95.3 The Score Host.
Oregon football has made huge strides in the time Chip Kelly was head coach. But now Duck fans say they are a little anxious, wondering if recruits will still want to play at UO now that the mastermind behind the team is heading for the pros.
“A couple of guys are thinking about flipping, maybe opening things back up that are committed to Oregon right now are looking at a couple of other schools,” said Matt Prehm, 95.3 The Score Producer.
But even with Kelly’s exit, there’s still a lot of faith in Eugene that UO can attract the best talent in the country and carry on its unique style of play.
There may be lots of optimism for the future, but as for now, everyone is still shell shocked by the news
