Springfield, Ore. — Some kids in Springfield are getting a helping hand to prepare for school.
Partners such as Brattain House, the Springfield School District and the Wal-mart on Olympic Street all teamed up to Fill the Bus with backpacks and school supplies.
With nearly 60 percent of kids in the school district qualifying for free or reduced lunch, organizers say it shows there’s a need in the community.
“We know that there are a lot of kids in Springfield that their families are just struggling right now with paying their bills and we want to be able to help those kids get the things they need to be able to sit in their desk and be able to learn,” said Gloria Griffith, Springfield School District.
Last year the Brattain House gave away about 1,800 backpacks.
