Springfield Robbery Attempt Thwarted

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Springfield man is in jail after police say he attempted to rob a deli with a hatchet.

Officers responded Sunday night to a 911 call of employees holding down a man with a hatchet at the Ashley’s Deli on Main Street, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Units arrived and placed 22-year-old Sidney Sean Queener in custody.

An investigation revealed that Queener entered the deli with the hatchet and demanded money from an employee. A customer, not an employee, witnessed the robbery and grabbed the suspect from behind, placing him in a choke hold. The suspect dropped the hatchet and remained restrained until police arrived.

Queener was charged with Robbery 1 and Menacing and is lodged at the Lane County Jail.
