EUGENE, Ore. — Wednesday isn’t just the day after Christmas. In countries like Canada and Great Britain, it’s known as Boxing Day.
The traditional holiday is a celebration of gifting, especially to those in need. While largely not celebrated here in the states, on Wednesday St. Vincent de Paul brought it to Eugene.
The nonprofit awarded a special honor to Southtowne Rotary for its work collecting socks and underwear over the past several years.
“It’s just a very humbling experience, because it’s not about Southtowne Rotary. It’s not about me. It’s about the people, the recipients, and we’re just a part of the community trying to give back,” said Rotary member Ben Mondragon.
This year the group gathered more than 50,000 pairs of the undergarments for people in need locally.
