Students Celebrate Gift of Literacy

EUGENE, Ore. — Nearly 900 first grade students from Springfield Public Schools headed to Lane Community College Thursday morning for the annual Gift of Literacy Program.

The program runs all year long, starting at the beginning of the school year when students pick out a book they want to own. On Thursday, the students received their own copy of the book and got to spend the day listening to school administrators read to them. Senator Ron Wyden and Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg also read to students.

The district says literacy is a vital skill for young people.

“Literacy is a gateway skill. There’s just nothing like understanding that you’ve opened up that world for kids and that they can be successful because they can read and this is just the beginning,” said Shari Furtwangler, Two Rivers/Dos Rios Principal.

This is the eighth year the district has done this Gift of Literacy Program.
