Students Create Sportsmanship Project

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — The Civil War is long gone, but students from two local high schools are using the annual game to teach an important lesson.

Seniors at Thurston and Springfield are taking part in a program called “Putting the Civil Back in Civil War.” The goal is for older students to teach elementary students about fair play and sportsmanship.

“It feels good to know that we can have an impact on the kids in our community and that we can help them understand the importance of sportsmanship,” said Springfield High School senior Chloe Cummins.

Three students created the senior project that included presentations, skits and speeches from athletes.

Saturday is the big Thurston vs. Springfield Civil War Basketball Game.
