Students Get a Taste of World Politics

EUGENE, Ore. — More than 300 Eugene area high school students stepped away from their classrooms and into the world of politics Friday.

The high schoolers simulated a United Nations summit at the Eugene International Eurasian Conference.

Dressed in traditional attire from around the world, the students debated world issues. Students say the conference taught them how to think from a different perspective.

“It’s really interesting because you get to learn about all these different countries and see how politics actually works in the world and then kind of experience it for yourself,” said student Gobind Ollek.

“Because we’re all sort of learning about politics, we don’t know the ins and outs, and so it’s easy to sort of trick people and play people,” said student Sophia Warner.

Students represented countries from Europe to Asia.

It should also be noted that this event was put on by Eugene International High School and made possible from a grant by the Eugene Education Fund.
