Tax Refunds for Some Same-Sex Couples

(CNN) — Same-sex married couples who paid extra taxes because their marriage wasn’t recognized could get some of that money back.

Before this summer’s Supreme Court ruling, the Defense of Marriage Act defined marriage as a between a man and a woman. That meant same-sex spouses had to file individually.

Now they can file amended returns to see if they’re owed a bigger refund. That basically means redoing your taxes.

Going forward, married same-sex couples must file all returns as married.
