SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Three shooting incidents, in three different Springfield neighborhoods, in just two days, has kept officers busy this weekend. No one was injured in any of the incidents, but in each case a suspect was arrested. Three men were each arrested for firing shots during a dispute. Each had a .22 caliber hand gun or pistol.
Saturday at 2:00 a.m., Springfield Police responded to what began as a racial related dispute at V Street and Shadylane between a group of black men and a group of white men. They arrested 22-year-old Jeffrey Braden for allegedly firing a stolen gun into the air and trying to hide it. Neighbors say they heard someone yelling “white power.”
Then Saturday night, in a dispute on the 700 block of Oakdale Street, 22-year-old Joseph Vandervort was arrested for firing one shot from a semi-automatic pistol. The bullet lodged into a neighbor’s door. Police say Vandervort was intoxicated and had been fighting with his brother.
And early Sunday morning, 25-year-old Kurt Elkins was arrested for allegedly firing shots into the air in the midst of a dispute near 5th and B Street. Elkins says an unknown male threatened him with a knife. Police are still looking for that suspect, described as a white man in his 40s.
Investigators are still looking into each of these cases, call Springfield Police if you have any information.
