CORVALLIS, Ore. – Brandin Cooks caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown and Terron Ward rushed for 53 yards on eight carries but the Beavers lost to USC, 31-14, Friday night at Reser Stadium.
Cooks’ sixth and final reception of the game tied him with James Rodgers (2009) and Markus Wheaton (2012) for the most in a single season at Oregon State with 91. He has three regular-season games remaining to break the record.
His six catches also gave him 189 for his career.
The junior caught the Beavers’ lone offensive touchdown of the game, connecting on a 27-yarder with Sean Mannion at the 9:43 mark of the second quarter.
Down 14-7 after the touchdown strike, the Beavers tied the score just 14 seconds later when Ryan Murphy returned a Cody Kessler pass for a touchdown on the junior’s third interception of the season. It also marked the Beavers’ third “pick six” of the 2013 season.
The Trojans, however, went ahead for good five minutes later on a 18-yard touchdown rush by Javorious Allen. It was his second of three touchdowns on the night as he rushed for a 52-yarder with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter after tallying a 9-yard score in the first.
Ward averaged 6.6 yards per carry and his 53 yards were just two shy of his season-best 55 against Colorado.
Mannion finished the game 26-of-45 for 277 yards and one touchdown. His touchdown strike to Cooks in the second quarter was his 31st of the season.
Jabral Johnson led the Beavers with 12 tackles, while Caleb Saulo and Rommel Mageo had nine apiece. Scott Crichton was credited with one sack while Murphy and Devon Kell recorded half a sack apiece.
Kessler was 17-of-21 for the Trojans, throwing for 247 yards and one touchdown. Silas Redd rushed for 140 yards and Allen posted 133. Marqise Lee caught five passes for 105 yards.
