EUGENE, Ore. — Many people got new electronics for Christmas, and that new technology can sometimes be hard to figure out.

James Fretwell, owner of Jim’s Electronics in Eugene, says most electronics these days come with pretty simple and clear instructions, but it can be tough to tell the difference between a manufacturer error and a user error.

He says if you don’t know what’s causing the issue, call a professional for help.

Fretwell says that with all the technological advances in the last decade, a lot of times the issue is just compatibility.

For example, your old TV might not work with your brand-new Blu-Ray player, or you might just need an adapter.

Keegan Dellabough-Gormley owns Big City Gamin’ in Eugene, and he says he and his employees frequently help people troubleshoot issues, and he also recommends leaving technical work to the professionals.

“Don’t open it yourself,” he says. “Don’t try to do any repairs on your own, unless you have a good idea of what you’re getting into. Don’t go uninformed into a battle you can’t win.”

Fretwell says the way people handle their gadgets can also get them into trouble.

He says not only are flat screens fragile, but they’re also nearly impossible to fix.
