Truck Driver Cited in Hwy 97 Crash

LA PINE, Ore. – Oregon State Police say a commercial truck driver was cited Monday following a crash at the intersection of Highway 31 and Highway 97.

Troopers say around 5 a.m. Dennis C. Chaffin, 54, of Chilcoot, California, was driving west on Highway 31, when he reportedly fell asleep as he approached the Highway 97 intersection.

OSP says the truck went off the north shoulder, which woke Chaffin. He tried to steer the truck back on the road but it overturned, slid through the intersection and crashed into a construction sign.

OSP says Chaffin was wearing safety restraints and was not injured. He was cited for careless driving and failure to obey traffic control devices.

The truck’s cargo of buckets of pain and paint thinner spilled open in the trailer during the crash. SMAF Environmental HazMat personnel worked several hours to clean up the mess.
