AGATE BEACH, Ore. — Visitors to the beach today say they cant believe how quickly the area has transformed when just a few days ago the dock was sunk into the sandy ground.
After four days of work any visible sign of the more than 160-ton dock is gone.
Some visitors told KEZI 9 News that they thought the dock should have stayed as a tourist attraction for the city of Newport. Others say the attention it attracted was good for awhile but they’re happy the beach is back to normal.
Newport city leaders say they plan on salvaging a piece of the dock to used for a memorial placed at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. They say their ultimate goal is to have it ready for a dedication ceremony on the second anniversary of the tsunami in Japan.
