EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene and Springfield Water Rescue, Dexter Fire and the Lane County Sheriff’s Marine and Search and Rescue Units responded to a water rescue on the Willamette River Saturday.
Police say around 3 p.m. a group of nine people launched their six inflatable watercraft from Elijah Bristow Park. About two miles downstream one of the kayaks with two women in it overturned.
The strong current of the river pulled the two women under debris along the undercut shoreline. Both were entrapped for several minutes before they were able to extricate themselves with the help from other members of the group.
A fire rescue boat transported the women to a location under Jasper Bridge, where they were treated and released with minor scrapes.
Police say everyone was wearing their personal flotation devices.
