(CNN) — A group of scientists at the University of Warwick in the U.K. have discovered a way to recycle 100 percent of plastic.
Currently, only certain kinds of plastics can be recycled. Using a technique where heat is applied in the absence of oxygen to decompose materials, the university says it was able to break plastic down into its basic elements. The results could mean a significant reduction in pollution.
The EPA reports only seven percent of plastic waste generated in 2009 was recovered for recycling.
