Union Pacific Train Derails

LE GRANDE, Ore. – Oregon State Police and Union Pacific Railroad officials responded to a train derailment Wednesday morning.

Troopers say around 1:45 a.m. a Union Pacific train derailed on the tracks north of Highway 203 near Hot Lake. A total of 27 cars derailed, but not all overturned.

OSP confirmed two of the train’s tankers contained hazardous materials, but did not leak anything as a result of the derailment. As a precaution, some area residents were evacuated.

An eight-mile stretch of Highway 203 was closed down as crews investigated the scene. ODOT will remain along the highway to handle traffic throughout the day as crews work to move the train

No one was injured in the derailment.
