UO Vets Help Vets Housing Project

Vets helping VetsEUGENE, Ore. — A group of University of Oregon student veterans spent Saturday lending a hand to others who have also served our country.

The Veterans Housing Project offers affordable homes to local veterans who have recently returned to the US from deployment. St. Vinnie’s is behind the project, but they say a lot of community partners and volunteers help make it possible.

A group of about 15 veterans from the U of O volunteered Saturday, to help build a deck and lay the foundation for the project’s fifth home, on 13th and Jefferson.

“I think it’s very important,” said Michael Tieman, the UO’s Veteran’s Programs Coordinator. “To know that you are still worth something. I think that’s something that some Veterans still struggle with. So being able to volunteer at a level like this, for veterans, for anyone really, but specifically for veterans is a great idea.”

Tieman is a member of the National Guard and is headed to Afghanistan in June. He says volunteering Saturday was also a way for the students to say thank you to fellow vets.
