UO Wins Recyclemania Civil War

RECYCLEMANIA PICEUGENE, Ore. — The University of Oregon brought home the trophy for the second straight year after beating Oregon State University–not in athletics, but recycling.

The goal behind the national competition called Recyclemania is to encourage zero waste on college campuses.

The Ducks edged the Beavers this year by collecting more than 160 tons of waste and compost. Collectively, they brought in more than 300 tons.

Organizers from the UO say the eight-week competition ended at the perfect time.

“It makes for a good lead into next week, which is Earth Day and Earth Week, and is a good reminder for the rest of campus to think about reducing waste and thinking zero waste on campus,” said Robyn Hathcock, UO Zero Waste program coordinator.

She says both schools are competing again next year.
