Vandals Strike Historic Cemetery Again

LANE COUNTY, Ore. — Cleanup is under way in one of the valley’s oldest pioneer cemeteries.

Vandals knocked over a few of the headstones over the weekend at the Luper Pioneer Cemetery. Most of them appeared to be just pushed over on their sides.

This is the third time in the last few years vandals have hit here.

Cemetery President Peter Thurston says the damage isn’t as bad as the vandalism back in 2009, but it’s still frustrating.

“When you work so hard for a number of years and you see the progress and then to have something stupid happen where somebody has damaged this historic site,” Thurston said. “It just kinda sets you back a little bit.”

Some of Lane County’s oldest residents were buried at the cemetery, with the headstones dating back to the 1850s.

If you have any information about the vandalism, call the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
