EUGENE, Ore. — It was a big day at the University of Oregon as the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lane County installed a historic post on campus.
The VFW held the ceremony at Mac Court Arena. It’s the ninth post in District 13, which is all of Lane County. It’s the first virtual post on a college campus in the nation.
Coordinators say it’s been months of planning to get to this day. They believe the virtual post is going to help younger vets in Lane County and on campus get involved with the VFW.
“Knowing that you have a group that’s been around for a long, long time, advocate on their behalf…I think it’s going to help involve them within their culture on campus and nationally to realize their place within society, which is important post-service,” says UO Vet Program Coordinator Michael Tieman.
This is the sixth virtual post in the country. Coordinators say it took about 45 people to sign up in order for the installment to happen.
