Volunteers Build Conestoga Huts

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Providing affordable shelter to those in need took center stage at a Springfield church Wednesday.

Volunteers spent the afternoon building Conestoga huts at First Baptist Church.

Local designers came up with the idea as an inexpensive way to build safe housing. This is the second hut built by First Baptist volunteers for Springfield. Their idea is to expand huts outside of Eugene.

“There are a lot of unhoused folks in Springfield and we are really focusing on those folks in what we’re doing. And this part of town has, we have a pretty good network going on in terms of community involvement and support,” said Jeff Savage, First Baptist Pastor.

He says they’ve been working with other churches to build more huts. Thurston High School students are helping fund the huts.
