EUGENE, Ore. — The man who fired shots Thursday night outside a local Walmart is behind bars.
Neighbors told KEZI 9 News they heard something Thursday night but couldn’t quite figure out what was going on, but they knew something was wrong.
It was a frantic scene in the parking lot of Walmart on Green Acres Road as police responded to reports of a man who was shooting at the lights in the parking lot just before 10 a.m.
Police say the suspect Joshua Abdon tried to escape in the wooded area nearby before police showed up.
“So we brought in canines after setting up a perimeter. Canines upon their search located the subject. They confronted him. The subject was compliant, did what he was asked to do and was taken into custody without incident,” said Sgt. Brian Molony, Eugene Police Department.
Police say Abdon was carrying a .45 caliber handgun, several magazines and extra ammunition. Detectives don’t know if the gun was registered to him or if he had a concealed handgun license, but they say he was high on meth and has a history of mental illness.
“He’s had police contact in the past and he can be up and down on his emotional state,” Sgt. Molony.
Randy and Tana Taylor live right behind Walmart and heard the whole thing.
“I was laying there with my husband, and I was closing my eyes and I hear this pow, pow, pow, pow!” said Eugene resident Tana Taylor.
The Taylors have lived in this house for close to 30 years and have felt relatively safe. But last night’s incident makes them nervous…
“It is scary. People 10 o’clock coming out of Walmart were probably not expecting to see something like that,” Tana Taylor said.
“We’re on a dead end here, and this church property across the street here, a lot of homeless people come off the freeway and camp out there,” said Eugene resident Randy Taylor.
But with Abdon’s arrest, things have calmed down and business is back to normal.
Abdon is facing charges including seven counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Employees at the Walmart put the store on lockdown. No one was injured during the incident.
