CORVALLIS, Ore. — The first official “scrum” of the 2013 season was held Friday at the Tommy Prothro Football Complex under thinning clouds and for the second time with music provided by DJ Marcus Gores.
Head coach Mike Riley’s team ran 52 plays of live scrimmage, highlighted by a Storm Woods 80-yard touchdown run thanks to terrific upfront blocking by the Beavers’ offensive line. What has so often been a question mark in the spring in years past, the offensive line, is far from it this season and in fact might be the biggest strength of the team.
Junior Obum Gwacham scored the other touchdown of the day, in showing his great athleticism, with a 25-yard reception from quarterback Cody Vaz.
“Today was good; the young guys got a lot of turns at the end,” Riley said “The players get a little nervous when they hear the word scrimmage, but overall I thought it was a good day. Both Sean (Mannion) and Cody (Vaz) looked good in both the scrimmage and the earlier skeleton drills.”
OSU takes the weekend off before returning to the field Monday for the start of the third week of drills.
