Road Worker Dies in I-5 Crash

WOLF CREEK, Ore. — Oregon State Police is continuing its investigation into a fatal crash on Interstate 5 Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers say around 1 p.m. a freightliner truck pulling a semi-trailer sideswiped a pickup and trailer parked on the side of the road. The pickup and trailer belonged to an employee of the Knife River Corporation who was working on a paving project. The pickup was stopped on the right shoulder with overhead caution lights and emergency flashers activated. The employee, 60-year-old Kathleen Roberta Wilson, of Trail, was outside of the pickup breaking down a portable sign next to the guardrail.

The semi-trailer sideswiped the pickup and caused part of the trailer to go over the top of the guardrail and struck Wilson.

Troopers say the driver of the semi-trailer, Jose Guadalupe Botello Sr., 58, of Salem, was unaware that someone was injured and continued until he stopped at a nearby gas station. Botello was contacted by an OSP trooper and went back to the scene.

After emergency responders arrived on scene, Wilson was pronounced deceased.

Botello has cooperated with troopers. No charges have been filed.
