West Lawn Memorial Park is one of three sites participating in Wreaths Across America. What started at Arlington National Cemetery is now here in Lane County.
The wreaths have arrived. On Friday they’re being prepped, fluffed, and the ribbons straightened.
This is the fourth year the local branch of the Civil Air Patrol has organized the event, which included gathering donations to pay for the wreaths. Each wreath costs $15.
Six of them at each ceremony are decorated with flags–one for each branch of the military. Another wreath is in remembrance of prisoners of war and those missing in action.
Organizers partnered with Musgrove Family Cemeteries to hold the Wreaths Across America ceremony at three locations.
“This is a way we can help other people remember that there are veterans out here in these cemeteries and some don’t have families to honor their grave sites,” said Cpt. Roxanne Cole, Civil Air Patrol.
The ceremony will be inside and will include a lighting of candles.
Veterans and anyone wishing to honor those who have passed are welcome to attend. The first ceremony is at Springfield Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Ceremonies are also scheduled at 1 p.m. at Lane Memorial Garden and 3 p.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park on Saturday.
The Patriot Guard Riders are holding their 7th annual Wreath Across America ceremony in Roseburg. That’s at 1 p.m. at the Roseburg National Cemetery.
The wreaths representing the six military branches will be placed out at the Veterans’ Memorial. As far as the other wreaths, they’ll be placed randomly on veterans’ graves.
