HOOD RIVER, Ore. – Oregon State Police says a Washington man faces several charges following a wrong way head-on crash on Interstate 84 Friday.
OSP and Hood River Police say around 8:30 p.m. they responded to a report of a vehicle traveling the eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84. Minutes later other calls came in reporting a head-on crash on the interstate involving a wrong-way driver.
Police say Leonard L. Gilbert, 78, of White Salmon, was driving a Buick east in the westbound lanes, when he hit the left rear of a Ford Escape before crashing head-on with a Toyota Camry.
Gilbert was transported by ambulance to the Mid-Columbia Medical Center with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
The Toyota’s two occupants were transported by ambulance to Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. They were identified as driver CHELSEA D. ZIEGLER, 21, and passenger SAMUEL K. LOWE, 21, both from Camas, Washington. Both were wearing safety restraints.
The driver of the Ford Escape was not injured.
Gilbert was cited for DUII, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, assault in the third degree and failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in a property damage accident.
