Duck Volleyball ready for season opening tournament

Eugene, Ore. -- With their Green-Yellow scrimmage and annual preseason alumni match wrapped up, Oregon volleyball now turns their attention to some actual competitive opponents. The Oregon Invitational begins on Friday with a doubleheader for the Ducks; first against Portland State and then against Santa Clara. They wrap up on Saturday with an afternoon game with San Jose State. Not only will it mark the first games of the new season for Oregon but their first sets of games in Matthew Knight Arena with fans since 2019.

"We missed not having supports," said head coach Matt Ulmer. "We missed not having supporters from the other side. Just the whole environment was different. I think we're excited about that. And the whole community aspect. Just connecting. Seeing people after the game."

The Ducks are coming off a Sweet 16 run in the abbreviated 2020 season, which saw them a couple of matchups away from a Pac-12 season title. The Sweet 16 trip was the second time under Ulmer and the seventh time in program history. And most of the firepower from last years team is coming back. Outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller was named to the preseason All-Pac-12 team, the lone Duck to do so. The team as a whole was picked to finish third in the Pac-12, just behind Washington and one vote behind UCLA for second. They checked in at No. 14 in the AVCA Preseason top 25.

"We're a pretty solid team coming off of last year and we're hopeful we can continue to grow," Ulmer said. "We know that if we put out the same lineup we did to end last year we're a good team. So just trying to discover things and see what we have."

Oregon hosts the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge on September 10th and 11th. Penn State and Minnesota both come to town before the Ducks head onto their last non-conference tournament in Washington State.
