GARDEN CITY, NY (ABC) - The parents of Liam O'Brien said they had no clue what was about to happen, as their son entered 7th grade as a happy kid and an excelling soccer player.

They said one year later, because of bullying at Garden City Middle School, he is now in a medical center being treated for depression and an eating disorder.

Liam's mom posted his story on Facebook and has received more than 1000 comments and thousands of shares. Even prompting the hashtag "#WeStandWithLiam" on Twitter.

Liam's family said it started when two children told him he shouldn't have made the soccer team. Then it escalated, his parents said classmates began calling him weird and attacking his physical appearance, saying he was fat, his freckles and eyebrows were weird.

They said for an entire year Liam didn't tell anyone what was happening.

His parents said he slowly gave up on his phone, stopped seeing friends, and lost interest in soccer. His parents said he started eating less and lost 10 pounds in a month. In September he had a feeding tube put in, and entered an intensive eating disorders program.

"He was never the type of kid I thought, not in my wildest dreams, would he have been bullied." Said his mother Deirdre.

The O'Briens said the school opened an investigation but told the family they found no evidence of bullying.

The O'Brien's filed a claim, the first step in a lawsuit, against the Garden City School District.

Child psychologists told ABC News, that while a lot of kids immediately report bullying, it's very common for children to hide it too.
