LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- A new group is hoping to hand out hundreds of bikes to kids in the community, but first they need donations.
Free Bikes 4 Kidz Eugene Springfield will collect gently used bikes this weekend, and over the next two months, they’ll clean and refurbish them with new chains, cables and tubes. A certified bike mechanic will also check out the bikes.
Organizers said bikes aren’t just toys. They give kids a sense of freedom so they can get to neighborhood and school activities. It also teaches them responsibility and gets them moving.
“You know a lot of times when a kid outgrows a bike, it just sits in the garage collecting dust,” Board President Allison Straub said. “So, this is a good chance to recycle it. It will be new to a kid in our community and they’ll get to use it for years.”
They will be collecting bikes Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at all Bi-Mart stores in Eugene and Springfield.
The group will work with nonprofits, faith-based organizations, schools and community organizations to find children who need bikes.
Children will get to pick out their new bikes and helmets on giveaway day Dec. 8.
