EUGENE, Ore. -- You can learn all about composting for free this weekend in Eugene.

The Santa Clara Community Garden is hosting a workshop on how to build a lasagna bed on Saturday.

One of the best things about lasagna gardening is how easy it is. Essentially, you add layers of materials that “cook down” over time.

They use leftover food from the food pantry at the church for their compost.

“You need to add organic compost material to the soil so it doesn’t run out of steam, in effect,” Peter Thurston with the garden said. “Soil isn’t just a medium to grow things in. It provides the nutrients for the plants.”

The workshop starts at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s, 4110 River Road.

You don’t have to register to attend. Another class will be held June 23 where you can learn to compost with worms.
