Guide to a waste-free holiday

The winter holidays will be over soon and Lane County officials want to make sure you are recycling your items.

LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- The Lane County Master Recycler Program said there are several ways to take care of the most common items generated during the holidays.

Recycle Block Styrofoam
St. Vincent de Paul is Lane County’s source for recycling white block #6 polystyrene, commonly known by the brand name Styrofoam, and packing peanuts. It shreds blocks and compresses it into logs, making it more cost-effective to transport. Styrofoam peanuts are used at Aurora Glass or resold in thrift stores.

Households in Eugene and Springfield can recycle small amounts of Styrofoam for free at any St. Vincent de Paul location. They ask that you keep packing peanuts and block foam separated. They do not take Styrofoam food containers.

Recycle Christmas Lights

NextStep Recycling is collecting Christmas lights for recycling, whether they work or not. They sell the lights to Schnitzer Steel which repurposes the material, thereby reducing waste sent to landfills. All proceeds from the recycled lights go to Bags of Love and Healthy Moves during the month of December. They hope to raise $2,000 for each charity and recycle $2,000 worth of lights.

Recycle Christmas Trees

Boy Scout Troop 182 is picking up Christmas trees for $10 on weekends between December 26 and January 21. They don't take flocked or painted trees. For more information click here.

McCornack Elementary School's fifth-grade class is also picking up trees to raise funds for a trip to Washington D.C. next summer. They will be picking up trees between December 30 and January 28. To schedule your tree to be picked up click here.

If you want to recycle your tree by yourself, Rexius (150 Highway 99, Eugene) and Lane Forest Products (2111 Prairie Rd., Eugene and 820 N. 42nd St., Springfield) are accepting green and flocked trees for a fee.
