EUGENE, Ore. -- Hummingbird Wholesale, a family-owned business in Eugene, is going above and beyond to help its customers recycle.
The organic food distributor sells nuts, honey, oils and more, and when customers buy products from Hummingbird Wholesale, they pay a deposit on the packing materials, such as jars and plastic tubs. Customers get the deposit back when they return the containers.
The company has an 85 percent recycle rate on plastic containers, which means they’ve been able to keep 30 to 40 thousand pounds of plastic out of landfills each year.
“Just trying to be conscious of our personal impact, as a business we have a personal accumulated impact,” Hummingbird Wholesale CEO Charles Tilt said. “How I see it, we can make an easier way for the customer to do a better job where they don’t have to work as hard because we’ve already set them up to be successful.”
The company sells the buckets they can’t reuse, and other pieces are recycled at EcoSort.
