ROSEBURG, Ore. -- November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It's the second most common cancer. Here's what you need to know.

Experts say 85% of cases are current or former smokers.

"There's some things we can control in medicine, and there are some things we can't control and one is the use of tobacco," Dr. Randy Moore said.

Moore said that's why smokers need to be screened. Anyone who's smoked one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years should undergo a low dose CT scan every year until age 74.

Catching it early is key.

Symptoms to watch for include a cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, hoarseness, decreased appetite, wheezing, feeling tired and unexplained wight loss.

KEZI 9 Checks In is a monthly reminder for women to do a self breast exam to check for any lumps or changes. You can sign up for KEZI 9 News Checks In, and we’ll send you a reminder each month.
