EUGENE, Ore. -- More than 40 million pounds of food go to waste every year in Eugene, and one local group has found a fun way to address the problem.

Love Food Not Waste will have a booth set up at the Tuesday market in downtown Eugene this summer, with workers dressed up as carrots and blueberries, all to encourage kids to stop by and play games that teach them how to not waste food.

“Being in a spot like this is great because we’re able to connect with farmers and people who are interested in local food,” said Allie Breyer, a waste prevention analyst. “And we’re also able to interact with lots of kids and get them involved in food waste education and reducing their food waste. And starting at a young age, it always inspires them as they get older too.”

Experts say when you go shopping, make a list and stick to it, and learn how to store food so it doesn’t go bad.
