NATIONAL (ABC) - A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found 30 percent of teens under the age of 18 are receiving sexts, and 15 percent are sending them.

Sexts are sexually explicit images, videos or messages being shared electronically.

Researchers looked at 39 different studies to get this information.

The study also found that approximately 1 in 8 kids report either forwarding or having a sext forwarded without consent.

The authors didn't look into the reasons why kids sext, but it has been shown to predict sexual activity and may be associated with health outcomes and risky behavior.
