Eugene, OR -- On Thursday afternoon, Sheldon High School honored 24 student athletes and their athletic achievements to continue at the next level. Of the 28 Irish seniors, 4 included musicians that will join division I marching bands.
This graduating class of 2019 was one of the largest for the high school and included players from their high-profile football team, who took home 2nd place at the 2018 OSAA State Championships. Madelyn Salisbury will continue play at College of the Siskyous, Matthew Burgess will attend Carroll College, Patrick Herbert is already attending classes at the University of Oregon after his first spring game appearance, and Zach Folsom signed with Portland State.
"Obviously any other school that offered me was a complete blessing," Folsom said. "It always was the dream to go Divison I and I'm so glad Portland State gave me the opportunity."
Two members from the softball team, Olivia Schmidt and Emma Neuman, will continue at St. Martin's University and Central Washington, respectively.
On the baseball side of things, Isaiah Lugo will accompany Schmidt at St. Martin's and Calin Morgan will juggle baseball and football at George Fox University.
A wide variety of track and cross-country athletes will compete all over the West Coast. Kaylin Sheley will head off to Eastern Washington in the fall, DJ Seguin will stay close to home at Lane Community College, Katelyn Foutz will attend BYU, and rounding out the team is Madelyn Hubbs who will study at Pacific University.
Sheldon boasts four more female student-athletes as two soccer team members, Emily Wiltshire and Mia Minson, will go to Mount Royal University and Oberlin College. Two volleyball players, Peyton Ritchie and Mackenzy Borek, will play at Northwest Christian University and Central Washington.
Kami Walk, who helped her basketball team to a 24-6 finish will play at Southern Oregon University. The Fighting Irish boys basketball team finished third in league this year and senior Dominic McGarvey will continue at Lane Community College and Avery Templeman will play for New Hope Christian College.
A couple of swimmers will move onto a different pool. The pair of Emily Corbett and Seth Mullikin will attend Southwestern Oregon Community College and Sophia Ranck will compete in the triathlon team at Wagner College.
Cheer team member, Julia Acree will go to Oregon State and Diego Balderas will play lacrosse at Whittier College.
This was also the first year that Sheldon High School honored the signing of band musicians that will all go on to division I schools. Luis Tort, Maisey Schering, and Anna Boyd will join the University of Oregon marching band. Finally, Aidan Seidel will join the marching band at Washington State University.
Of these 28 student-athletes, they represent 12 Sheldon High School sports.
