SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The needs of skilled labor industries are rising in Oregon, even as unemployment is at an all-time low in the state.

Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry Commissioner-Elect Val Hoyle said in order to fill those much-needed positions, there has to be a better connection between schools and trade jobs.

Hoyle highlighted the issue at the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce’s annual conference in Springfield last week.

“We need to make sure that the career technical education (CTE) programs that are in our middle schools and high schools are actually feeding into the jobs that are available,” Hoyle said. “So, teaching job skills that will actually get kids good jobs and employment.”

Hoyle said as commissioner-elect, she plans to work with local industries and high school programs with CTE courses to create avenues for apprenticeships during and directly after high school.
