EUGENE, Ore. -- Following a similar announcement from Springfield Public Schools, the Eugene School District 4J school board has also voted to push back the start of their school year.
This comes as a fire burning east of Springfield continues to grow. The Holiday Farm Fire has threatened numerous buildings and lives as residents continue to evacuate.
4J officials said the fire has had a significant impact on district staff, students and family.

The current plan is for 4J schools to start on Sept. 21. The school calendar has been adjusted to make up some school days and balance the trimesters, officials said. Two school days will be restored in February and March. Winter break, spring break, and the end of the school year have not changed. The last day of school is still June 17.
The hazardous air quality has had an impact on planned technology pickup events. Those pickup days will be rescheduled. To learn more, click here.
Currently, about half of district students do not yet have the student learning devices they need to access online instruction.
Starting next week, school food service will begin with free grab-and-go meals for all 4J students and all youth unless air quality prevents outdoor activity.
Teachers will use the additional time to prepare for the school year.
The potential date for the start of hybrid learning is now Jan. 5.
