ELKTON, Ore. – A fire sparked at a hay field about five miles southeast of Elkton on Monday night.

Reports came in around 6 p.m. of the fire located near the 20000 block of Highway 138 West.

The first engine on scene reported that the Highway 138 West Fire was about three acres in size, but windy conditions spread the fire quickly, according to the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

The landowner helped firefighters by using their bulldozer to dig a fire trail around the flames.

DFPA says the fire burned a total of 11 acres of cut hay, part of which had already been baled. A hay baler was also damaged.

The fire was out by 8 p.m.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by hay equipment working in the field.
