LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- A fire burning at the Howard Buford Recreation Area on Mount Pisgah is not expected to grow, Oregon Department of Forestry officials say.

The fire started on the southeast side of Mt. Pisgah at about noon on Thursday and grew to 51.15 acres, burning through grass, brush, slash and timber. It's now 75% contained.

Dave Kjosness with the Oregon Department of Forestry said there are 60 people on site working to get to full containment and mop up the fire.

He said cooler weather on Friday morning helped their firefighting efforts, and they hope to have the fire out soon.

"We're ideally hoping to have it completely cold to the touch all the way across the fire by Sunday evening," he said.

Buford Park, Mt. Pisgah Arboretum and all surrounding trails will be closed through Sunday at least.

Sky Brown, who lives just down the road from the southeast parking lot of Mt. Pisgah, said he set up sprinklers around his property in an effort to keep any embers from reaching his home. He said he's grateful for all the work firefighters have done.

"It would have been really bad if it hit the firs right behind us here, 'cause that was our last line of defense really," Brown said. "At one point, it did kind of start getting into there and that's when the big tankers came in and started really putting down some heavy dumps."

County officials said trails on the east side were most affected.

"You're going to find places where the vegetation has burned, and there could be some trees that could be a little bit dangerous there," Kjosness said.

As of Friday afternoon, the cause remained under investigation.
