Chief Kerns returns to work after retirement

Chief Kerns will go back to work after he retires from the Eugene Police Department.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Chief Pete Kerns made a major announcement Monday morning on his pending retirement.

KEZI learned the chief plans to go back to work. When he retires, Kerns will become the chief of staff at Saint Vincent de Paul.

"I have been looking forward, upon retirement from EPD, to continue serving our community. St. Vincent de Paul has been an example of selfless and meaningful service in my life for as long as I can remember," said Kerns. "It's a great honor for me to join its leadership team."

Kerns will help track and coordinate new programs.

Kerns served as chief of police since 2008. He plans to spend time with his family before starting his new job at Saint Vincent de Paul in the Spring.
